I believe anybody can determine that simply from their behaviour such as pets not wishing to play or eat, not resting, or resting much more, or perhaps making far more sounds compared to normal. Considering that we're unable to ask, all of us won't be able to fully understand for certain if these things point out sadness, however it is possible that animals really feel and show their feelings this way.
